Guwahati |
In the wake of fresh unrest in neighboring Bangladesh, a high alert has been declared across Assam. The announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while speaking to journalists during an event in Guwahati on Monday. He stated that the state government is closely monitoring every political and social development in Bangladesh and has adopted maximum vigilance in the current situation.
The Chief Minister said, “The violence against minority Hindus in Bangladesh and the incidents of people being set on fire have been witnessed by all of us. This is extremely concerning and poses a threat to Assam and the entire region.” He further added that a section of Bangladesh’s ruling establishment has repeatedly suggested integrating India’s northeast with their country, which he described as irresponsible and dangerous.
Border Situation and History of Infiltration
Assam has experienced infiltration from across the border at various times. According to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, “Assam is currently bearing the burden of this problem; there is no denying it.” In the past, several incidents of cross-border infiltration have compelled local administration and security forces to take stringent measures. Given the present circumstances, drawing on these past experiences makes heightened vigilance absolutely necessary.
The Chief Minister emphasized, “We must remain alert. Every aspect of what is happening in Bangladesh is being closely monitored. Ensuring the safety of Assam’s people and the border areas is the government’s top priority.”
Recent Political Unrest in Bangladesh
Last week as well, the Chief Minister had alleged that certain elements in Bangladesh were repeatedly claiming that India’s northeast should be merged with Bangladesh. CM Sarma called such statements “provocative” and said, “India is a large country, a nuclear power, and the fourth-largest economy in the world. How can Bangladesh even think of such a thing?” His communication was unequivocal — India shall not stay silent when confronted with such provocative statements.
The recent incidents of violence in Bangladesh targeting minority Hindu communities have also raised concern among local politicians and the general public. The Chief Minister confirmed that Assam’s administration has intensified border surveillance to monitor and prevent any spillover of unrest.
High Alert and Administrative Measures
Under the Assam government’s directive, high alert has been imposed across all border areas of the state. Security forces are maintaining 24-hour surveillance over the borders and key locations. Stringent monitoring by border police and other security agencies ensures that any unusual activity is detected quickly and responded to immediately.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, "The situation at the border is highly sensitive.". Learning from past experiences, we are even more vigilant now. Our goal is to maintain peace and security in Assam.”
Advisory to Local Residents
The government has advised residents in border areas to remain cautious. Additionally, local administration and district police are working to raise awareness among citizens. The Chief Minister noted that, as a border state, Assam is always prepared to face political unrest and the risk of infiltration.
Conclusion
The high alert in Assam, triggered by recent unrest in Bangladesh, is being seen as a timely and prudent measure by the government. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has clearly stated that ensuring peace and security in Assam remains the government’s top priority. Through vigilant border monitoring, strict administrative measures, and public awareness campaigns, the state government is prepared to tackle the situation.
The Assam government’s objective is clear — maintain peace, ensure border security, and monitor every potential risk. The Chief Minister further emphasized that, learning from past experiences, maximum vigilance is being maintained without leaving any room for lapses.
